This set design consists of a stark white room that feels manufactured and clinical, forming a space that has no spirit or soul. This represents the urbanised Western world that the protagonists live in as they leave their Aboriginal culture and land behind. The red sand symbolises Jason and Medea’s cultural land and ancestors. The juxtaposition between this fiery red sand with the institutional white surroundings highlights that they perhaps do not belong there. As the play progresses, more and more sand enters the space, indicating that they cannot abandon their heritage. Once Medea’s child dies, the sand is smeared across the space, transforming the space to a bloody and violent one.
