In my interpretation of Orlando, Sarah Ruhl and Virigina Woolfe criticise the conventional nature of society, rather encouraging us to embrace our authentic selves and explore who we are. I have created a rigid box-like space with walls that form a grid, visually symbolising the conformity of traditional society. However, the space is also quite dynamic due to the hidden doorways that actors can use to enter the space. The playful and abstract costumes also challenge the linear set design through their obscure forms and unconventional colour palette. The actors will further get dressed onstage, gradually leaving their costumes around the set, and eventually forming a cluster of mess and colour. This represents a journey of self-discovery and reminds us that life can be messy.
